Gretchen, my sincere sympathies to you and your family. May his soul rest in peace now and the memories you shared provide some comfort during this time.
Though Bill Jr. was my step-brother, I only met him a few times, with our lives being separated by time and distance. But I see his picture and in that picture I see his dad, my step-dad, Captain Bill Sr. The smile and friendliness reminds me of Captain Bill and I'm sure to all who knew and loved Bill Jr, and those who only knew him in passing, that smile and friendliness was so evident. To Captain Bill, my mom Kate and the entire Gardiner family, I send my love, thoughts and prayers. I pray that our God embrace all of you in his loving arms, as there is no greater comfort than the love we receive from above.
Bill and I shared a professional relationship at first. When I learned of his Coast Guard service, I told him about my son being in the Coast Guard as well. My son is a radio technician. We hit it off. One can not help but immediately like Bill. Great smile, straight forward and you knew he enjoyed life and his family. I remember while he was on our project he spoke about going to San Francisco, I think for a wedding or a family get together. I talked to Bill just before he started back to work, and I am glad I did. I wish I would have talked to him again. My heart sunk when I heard the news and pray for Peace for Bill's family. Fair winds and following seas my friend!
Gretchen, I truly believe "there's a land beyond the river that they call the sweet forever..." may you find comfort in knowing that Bill is at peace and looking after you. If you need anything, I am here my friend.
